Background information
World Breastfeeding Week is a week of action organised by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (Waba for short). It is considered the largest joint campaign of all organisations that promote breastfeeding – including UNICEF and the WHO. World Breastfeeding Week has been held annually in 120 countries since 1991. The aim of World Breastfeeding Week is to emphasise breastfeeding as a natural and self-evident nutrition for infants and to inform both families and society about the positive effects of breastfeeding – especially for further health development. In Germany, it always takes place in the 40th week of the year – 40 because a pregnancy lasts around 40 weeks. With the participation of WHO and UNICEF, it is the largest joint campaign of all breastfeeding-promoting organisations.
